Testing for Heart Disease

Cardiac Exercise Stress Test – This test is often recommended to identify the cause of chest pain and to diagnose coronary heart disease. A stress test will show how well your heart handled exercise. This is a noninvasive test that, you will walk on a treadmill or cycle on an exercise bike hooked up to an ECG monitor for up to 15 minutes. You will be monitored by medical professionals during the entire test. They will stop the test if they become concerned for your safety. Reasons to stop the test are:

  • You develop chest pain
  • Blood pressure becomes a concern
  • ECG shows your heart is not getting enough oxygen
  • You become too tired
  • Other symptoms prevent you from exercising.

Electrocardiogram – ECG or EKG measures the electrical pulses that trigger your heartbeat. This is a very safe procedure with virtually no risk and only takes a few minutes. The technician will tape electrodes to your chest which will send signals to a machine called an electrocardiograph. They will display the results as continuous wavy line with series of spikes.
